Avatar's genre is sci fi/ fanatasy this is stereotypically watched by a male audience so therefore it is not considered a four quadrant picture, due to expected view that it would not be watched by female as much. One thing that redeems this is that the film is in 3D so this would make the film more appealing to watch from others.
Avatar was directed by James Cameron who is known for the box office smash titanic which managed to gross more than $1 billon dollars at the box office. Other high profile films he's directed include Alien, The Terminator and  Terminator 2: Judgement day. He is currently the second highest grossed director of all time.

The cast of avatar were not well known actors until appearing on avatar the cast were Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana,Sigourney Weaver, , Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore Giovanni Ribisi and Michelle Rodriguez . Sam Worthington is quite well known how ever due to being a main character in Terminator Salvation.

Avatar was first screen on the 10th December 2009 in a London premier its US release was the 18th December 2009. The film was distributed is 20th century fox, FX and HBO.
On August 27, 2010 avatar was re-released to selected Imax and 3D cinemas it included an added 9 minutes of unseen footage. James Cameron said that for each additional minute footage costs an extra $1 million dollars to produce. The scenes included an extended version of the sex scene and other footage cut from the original release.
In total Avatar surpassed the current record for the most grossed film ever by earning $2,779,501,669 at the box office world wide. The films budget was $237 million plus an extra $9 million for the re-release. Marketing for the film were both above the line and below the line. Above the line marketing examples were trailers, posters, websites and premiers. Below the line marketing such as video games, toys and other merchandise.
My thoughts on Avatar were that it is a very appealing film that everyone could enjoy due to the 3D element and the hype that surrounded it. Also because of word of mouth and everyone saying how good and how they enjoyed it in itself advertised the film, so because of that it could have had an effect on the total box office that it achieved.
