'What representations of gender are constructed by the extract through the use of: Mise en scene / Editing / Use of camera / sound?'
From the very beginning of the trailer for the series you can tell that is it going to be focused on merlin. Also the majority of the trailer involves male characters. This is due to the setting of the programme which is set in the Medieval times which were ruled by men. The king is introduced how he is portrayed is a very important person that is well respected by the others and in charge of the kingdom, this is shown by how he orders people when he speak and nobody talks over him. A low angle shot is used when he is sitting on his throne with a crown on his head. He speak to his son this is shot with an over the shoulder shot to show he has authority in the kingdom as well. Editing has been done on the close shot of merlin when his eyes glow a different colour reinforcing the idea that he is magical. Magic is seen as banned from the kingdom so in the trailer merlin confirms this by saying in a quiet voice 'keep the magic secret'. In the whole trailer there are only 2 scenes with females in them and they are portrayed stereotypically because of the long black hair and the witch seen in another scene. So the representation of males in merlin are portrayed as having an advantage over women and having more right then they do. This is to keep in line with the history of men having more rights then women did in the medieval times. Merlin trailer

Thanks, Tom, some good observations. Think also about costumes/clothing as these are an important part of mis-en-scene
PS Hooray and I like the skin....
